‘A Napoleonic triumph of a guide, irresistibly galloping with the momentum of a cavalry cost’ Simon Sebag Montefiore
‘Merely dynamite’ Bernard Cornwell
From Andrew Roberts, writer of the bestsellers The Storm of Warfare and Churchill: Strolling with Future, that is the definitive fashionable biography of Napoleon.
Napoleon Bonaparte lived one of the vital extraordinary of all human lives. Within the area of simply twenty years, from October 1795 when as a younger artillery captain he cleared the streets of Paris of insurrectionists, to his last defeat on the (horribly mismanaged) battle of Waterloo in June 1815, Napoleon remodeled France and Europe. After seizing energy in a coup d’etat he ended the corruption and incompetence into which the Revolution had descended. In a collection of dazzling battles he reinvented the artwork of warfare; in peace, he utterly remade the legal guidelines of France, modernised her programs of training and administration, and presided over a flourishing of the gorgeous ‘Empire type’ within the arts. The impossibility of defeating his most persistent enemy, Nice Britain, led him to make draining and finally deadly expeditions into Spain and Russia, the place half 1,000,000 Frenchmen died and his Empire started to unravel.
Greater than every other fashionable biographer, Andrew Roberts conveys Napoleon’s great power, each bodily and mental, and the attractiveness of his character, even to his enemies. He has walked 53 of Napoleon’s 60 battlefields, and has absorbed the large new French version of Napoleon’s letters, which permits a whole re-evaluation of this distinctive man. He overturns many obtained opinions, together with the parable of a fantastic romance with Josephine: she took a lover instantly after their marriage, and, as Roberts reveals, he had 3 times as many mistresses as he acknowledged.
Of the climactic Battle of Leipzig in 1813, because the preventing closed round them, a French sergeant-major wrote, ‘No-one who has not skilled it might have any thought of the passion that burst forth among the many half-starved, exhausted troopers when the Emperor was there in particular person. If all had been demoralised and he appeared, his presence was like an electrical shock. All shouted “Vive l’Empereur!” and everybody charged blindly into the hearth.’
The reader of this biography will perceive why this was so.
